Laser detectors can generally sense the use of police guns and cameras from about 1.5 miles away. Of course this distance can range somewhat, depending on the quality of detector being used. Police guns and cameras, on the other hand, can only pick up a vehicle's actual speed when it is within about 1500 feet.

Police are making a stronger effort than ever to crack down on speeding, partly because of the danger of it, but mostly because speeding tickets are a proven effective way to generate revenue.
